Active Chemistry: NSF Grant |
|
Good news for teachers seeking a Standards-based, hands-on, full year chemistry course!
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has funded a grant to develop a full-year of Active Chemistry. This comprehensive 12-chapter program will use the same project-based and inquiry-driven approaches that have made Active Physics a success.
Active Chemistry began with the publishing of a three-chapter module of the curriculum last summer. Schools are currently using this initial three-chapter module as part of full-year chemistry courses and also as part of integrated science courses that combine Active Chemistry with modules from Active Physics and EarthComm, custom-matching needs and course descriptions.
The new, NSF-funded, full-year Active Chemistry curriculum is currently being developed in association with leading educators, scientists, engineers, and institutions, including members of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Four writing teams, led by top university educators, are working under the guidance of our Principal Investigators (PIs) to create twelve new chapters under the section headings: The Natural and Fabricated World, Arts and Leisure, Food and Drugs, and Sustainability. Rounding out the development team are a prestigious group of consultants and a Board of Advisors to steer and oversee the project.
Pilot testing of the curriculum is scheduled to take place during the 2003-2004 school year. Based on the feedback and research results from the pilot test, rewrites of the materials will be field tested during the 2004-2005 school year.
